Construction Update: November 28, 2023

The City of Niagara Falls has been working on infrastructure improvements on Main Street Chippawa between Willoughby Drive and Dock Street since June 2023 (Stage 1). Construction progress has been unreasonably slow, and we appreciate your ongoing patience and recognize the challenges endured by a longer-than-expected lane closure.

Seawaves Development Services Inc. demobilized from the site on Monday, November 27, 2023, and the remaining work in Contract 2023-519-20 will be completed under a new contract. Rankin Construction Inc. mobilized on Tuesday, November 28, 2023, to complete the Stage 1 construction work between Willoughby Drive and Dock Street as an emergency measure before winter maintenance begins. Completion of Stage 1 will be weather-dependent, with road base asphalt tentatively scheduled for December 15, 2023. Sidewalks will also be completed now, weather permitting.

Winter maintenance will be provided, as needed, and will continue up to the City takeover after hardscaping is completed and regular City maintenance will begin.

The revised tentative construction schedule on Main Street Chippawa is as follows:

Stage 1 – Willoughby Drive to Dock Street; June to December 2023

Stage 2 – Dock Street to Oliver Street; 2024 – Tender and Construction in 2024

Stage 3 – Sodom Road to Greenwood Street; 2024 - Tender and Construction in 2024

Stage 4 – Greenwood Street to Oliver Street; 2024 - Tender and Construction in 2024

Restoration timing for concrete, asphalt and sod work will be weather dependent. Any areas disturbed by the construction will be restored.

Detour Notices

The southwest-bound lane of Main Street Chippawa from Willoughby Drive to Dock Street will be closed during Stage 1 construction, tentatively scheduled from June 21, 2023, to December 2023. Businesses will remain open, and access will be available via the northeast-bound lane of Main Street Chippawa at Dock Street.

Due to the scope of the work involved, Main Street Chippawa may sometimes be limited to one side of pedestrian traffic. Driveway accessibility will be affected periodically during the sidewalk and curb construction, with every effort being made to give you advance notice as these restrictions are implemented.

Water Shutdowns

If there are unforeseen emergency water shutdowns, every effort will be made to notify you; however, notification may not always be possible. If you experience brown or discoloured water, please allow the water to run until clear. Should the water remain discoloured after continuous flow for greater than 20 minutes, please contact this Project Manager or the City's water department at 905-356-1355.
