The City of Niagara Falls is excited to announce the Opening Celebration for the Solar Neighbourhood Park Playground. The celebration will take place on Saturday, May 6, 2017 at 10:00 am at 6519 Jupiter Boulevard. Residents are encouraged to attend. Light refreshments will be served after the ceremony.

The playground at Solar Neighbourhood Park was identified as one of the oldest playgrounds in the City’s park system. The playground had poor accessibility due to a sand play surface base and was recommended for a complete replacement.

The new playground includes an accessible play structure and play surface, additional swings, more slides and play equipment, a second basketball net for the existing court, and more park seating and picnic opportunities.

This playground opening is part of “Operation Awesome Playgrounds”, an initiative Mayor Jim Diodati announced at his State of the City Address in March. As part of this initiative, the City’s program to refresh play structures is being accelerated, with 10 parks being replaced in 2017.

Niagara Falls, ON, April 20, 2017 – At his Annual State of the City Address, Mayor Jim Diodati announced that the City’s program to refresh play structures would be accelerated, with 10 parks being replaced in 2017 as part of “Operation Awesome Playgrounds”!

The City is excited to announce the 10 playgrounds that will be replaced in 2017 include:

    · Chippawa Lions Park (3970 Welland Street)

    · FJ Miller Park (7018 Valiant Street)

    · *Glenview Park (4521 Leader Lane)

    · *Gustavus Munroe Park (8180 Rideau Street)

    · Ontario Park (5300 Ontario Avenue)

    · *Prince Edward Park (5522 Prince Edward Avenue)

    · Royal Manor Park (5616 Glamis Crescent)

    · Solar Park (6519 Jupiter Boulevard)

    · *Stamford Lions Park (3843 Orlando Drive)

The playgrounds were selected based on the 10 year infrastructure assessment and the desire to geographically spread the playground replacements City-wide.

All park improvement projects will include new playground equipment, accessible pathways, seating, bike racks, signage and landscaping. Furthermore, all new playgrounds will receive an accessible artificial turf safety surfacing instead of the typical engineered wood chip surfacing.

In addition to the above, Ontario and FJ Miller Parks will each have a tennis court refurbished and a new multi-purpose basketball court established. As part of the Canada 150 celebrations, the new playground at Royal Manor Park will have a Canadiana theme.

Residents are encouraged to sign up to the City’s online engagement site letstalk.niagarafalls.ca, where the opportunity to vote on 2 different playground designs for the parks marked with an asterisk(*) will be made available in the coming weeks.

The first playground opening will take place on Saturday, May 6, 2017 at Solar Park at 10:00 a.m. – Everyone is welcome! The remainder of the park structures will be replaced commencing in July 2017 and will be completed by Fall 2017.
