Millennium Recreational Trail - Section 2
Consultation has concluded
The City of Niagara Falls is excited to be moving forward with the design and development of the final section of the Millennium Recreational Trail - Section 2 (south of McLeod Road following the Ontario Power Generation (OPG) Canal Corridor). Completion of this section will effectively connect the south end of the City to the north end of the City utilizing this recreational trail route, along the Ontario Power Generation (OPG) Canal Corridor.
The completion of the Millennium Recreation Trail is a City Council Strategic Priority. The first section of the Millennium Trail (Section 1 - the John McCall MacBain Pathway) was constructed in 2001, from McLeod Road at Oakwood Drive north to Lundy’s Lane. Through the past 20 years other sections of the Millennium Trail were constructed, and the trail gradually connected section by section. Section 2 is the last and final section of the Millennium Trail Masterplan to be completed.
On Tuesday, August 11, 2021, Council approved the agreements with Ontario Power Generation (OPG), and received Provincial and Federal funding assistance, to move forward with the last section of the trail. The Millennium Recreational Trail Section 2 development will include:
· Approximately 1.4 km of new 3m wide asphalt paved accessible trail
· Fitness equipment station
· Picnic tables, benches, and social gathering/event space
· Parking area
· Fencing and landscape buffering improvements
· Planting of over 200 native trees and plants along this new trail section
Phase 2 of this section of the trail is a proposed east link to Dorchester Road that creates an opportunity to connect with Fern Park and Fern Park Trail. Phase 2 has been deferred for future consideration due to current budget constraints.
